With up to 70,000 spectators expected to descend on the iconic French venue over the course of the weekend, those who braved Saturday morning’s downpour were rewarded with action from the outset. Heavy rain began falling early in the morning and continued until midday, prompting officials to declare a wet race and creating a formidable early challenge for the championship’s leading contenders.

Rytkönen immediately looked at home in the treacherous conditions. The Finn lined up against Sébastien Loeb, Fabien Pailler, Anton Seppä and Mats Öhman in one of the most competitive races of Qualifying 1, with Loeb setting the early pace and producing the fastest lap of the session on lap two.

The nine-time FIA World Rally Champion appeared set to mark his return to European rallycross with victory, but Rytkönen remained firmly in contention before snatching the lead at the very last corner. His late charge earned him both the heat win and the fastest overall time of Q1, placing him at the top of the standings ahead of Loeb and Ole Christian Veiby.

By Qualifying 2, the rain had relented and the circuit was drying rapidly, with lap times improving throughout the session. Rytkönen once again found himself in the day’s headline race, lining up alongside Loeb and the two Kristoffersson Motorsport Volkswagens of Johan Kristoffersson and Veiby.

Loeb made a strong start but slid sideways and dropped to fourth, leaving the two KMS cars to battle at the front. Kristoffersson ultimately prevailed, while Rytkönen remained patient and seized second place at the very last moment, finishing ahead of Veiby, Pailler and Loeb. That result was enough for the Finn to retain the overall lead after two sessions, with Kristoffersson moving up to second and Patrick O’Donovan occupying third.

Rytkönen completed his impressive Saturday with another assured performance in Qualifying 3. Andreas Bakkerud produced a perfect launch to lead the final heat, while a quick-starting Julien Febreau initially slotted into second and Kristoffersson deployed an early joker strategy in an attempt to move up the order.
Contact between Kristoffersson and O’Donovan subsequently left the Irishman with a front puncture and significant understeer. Bakkerud went on to win the race, but Rytkönen followed him home in second and collected enough points to preserve his place at the top of the overnight classification.

Behind him, home favourite Pailler produced the standout performance of Qualifying 3 to climb to second overall. The Frenchman had already shown strong pace in the wet, finishing third behind Rytkönen and Loeb in Q1, before taking fourth in the blockbuster final race of Q2.

Pailler then delivered when it mattered most in the final session of the afternoon. After Veiby made a strong start before slipping back, the Frenchman took control of his heat and posted a benchmark time of 2:34.976. Neither Turpeinen’s rapid 2:35.488 nor Bakkerud’s victory in the last race could dislodge him, handing Pailler the Q3 triumph and lifting him into second overnight in front of his home crowd.

Kristoffersson completes the leading trio after an eventful but characteristically competitive opening day. The Swede claimed his first heat victory in the heaviest of the morning rain after taking an early joker and putting Enlund under sustained pressure. His car developed an issue immediately after the chequered flag and had to be towed away, but he retained the result and returned for Q2.

The eight-time FIA World Rallycross Champion then controlled the day’s fastest second-session race to take victory ahead of Rytkönen and Veiby. A third-place finish behind Bakkerud and Rytkönen in his final heat left him third overall, keeping him firmly in contention heading into Sunday.

Bakkerud’s strong finish to the day places him fourth, ahead of Veiby and Loeb, while Febreau and Patrick O’Donovan occupy seventh and eighth. Rokas Baciuška and László Kiss complete the overnight top ten.

Elsewhere, Andrea Bénézet produced a determined drive to win his final heat despite sustaining damage in a chaotic Turn One incident that sent Ollie O’Donovan spinning. Kevin Hansen also endured a bruising afternoon, crossing the line in Qualifying 3 with a tyre missing following his battle with Loeb, while Nils Volland, Joni Turpeinen and Ollie O’Donovan were among several drivers whose days were complicated by contact or punctures.

With the order still finely balanced following a day of rain, sunshine and relentless action, Qualifying concludes on Sunday before the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final decide who will triumph at the 50th-anniversary Euro RX of France - with every moment of the action broadcast live on the FIA European Rallycross Championship YouTube channel.
