The Global Benchmark for Customer GT Racing
Launched in 2006, GT3 was designed around a simple yet revolutionary concept: prestigious production-based sports cars competing on a level playing field through Balance of Performance. Unlike traditional racing formulas that reward the biggest development budgets, GT3 allows cars with different engine layouts, designs and performance characteristics to compete together while controlling costs and maintaining close racing.
At the heart of GT3 is customer racing. Manufacturers develop and homologate cars that can be purchased and operated by independent teams, creating an accessible pathway for competitors while preserving strong links to road-going models. The category's inclusive philosophy also extends to its drivers, requiring cars that are competitive in the hands of factory professionals while remaining approachable for amateur racers.
Over the past two decades, GT3 has become the most successful customer-racing category in FIA history. Since the first homologation in 2006, the FIA has approved 57 GT3 models from 20 manufacturers, making it the benchmark for manufacturer participation and model diversity in GT racing.
Its success is built on versatility. Today, GT3 cars compete across every continent and at every level of the sport, from national championships and regional series to the world's most prestigious endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Spa, the Nürburgring 24 Hours and other classics. The same platform can be used for both sprint and endurance competition, creating an unmatched global ecosystem.
GT3 reached another milestone in 2024 when the FIA World Endurance Championship adopted the platform through the introduction of the LMGT3 category. The class brought to the world's premier endurance championship an unprecedented variety of makes and models while aligning it more closely with the global GT racing landscape and further cementing GT3's status as the international standard for production-based GT competition.
Twenty years after its creation, GT3 remains one of motorsport's greatest success stories: a class built on accessibility, inclusivity, manufacturer diversity and competitive parity, which continues to unite teams, drivers and manufacturers around the world.
