The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide has today released a new safety resource for its member clubs as well as karting circuits around the world containing advice, guidance and best practice on the safe running of karting private test sessions.

Karting testing is an important part of a driver’s calendar, offering vital opportunities to prepare and refine kart setups whilst sharpening race strategies and driver skill. To ensure these sessions are run safely, the FIA has published a checklist style of minimum standards which circuit operators are strongly encouraged to adopt to reduce risks and maintain consistent safety practices during private testing.

The guidelines, developed jointly between the FIA Karting and Safety Departments and supported by the FIA Foundation, include recommendations on the number of karts on track, medical response, marshals and the safety equipment which should be on site. As part of the FIA’s mission to raise safety standards across all levels of global motor sport, the document will be distributed to the FIA’s 145 member clubs (ASN’s) and serve as a best practice guide during the planning and organisation of testing events.

The development of the document has drawn upon global best practice and extensive research conducted to identify the practical and implementable steps that can be easily taken to secure a minimum baseline of track safety. Recognising the resource constraints of smaller circuits, it also provides adaptable solutions that can be tailored to the unique layout and operational needs of each venue.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, said:

“These dedicated guidelines provide practical, scalable solutions, from driver category separation to marshal and medical coverage, ensuring that safety always remains the priority regardless of session size or driver experience.

“By providing clear, accessible resources like this, we aim to empower our member clubs, organisers and circuit partners to uphold best practices and foster a safe, inclusive and thriving karting environment”

Akbar Ebrahim, FIA Karting Commission President, said:

Safe karting doesn’t end when the racing season ends. With more circuits providing testing sessions around the world, this document is an essential resource for ASNs, circuits and teams to implement the latest advice and guidance to keep everyone at the circuit safe.”

The FIA Guidelines for Minimum Safety Requirements during Karting Private Testing document has been released to ASN’s today and is available to access here.
