New teams join expanded FIA FREC entry

14.10.26
  • The 10 founding FIA FREC teams from 2026 have been selected for 2027 alongside newcomers Invicta Racing and LN4 Fusion, co-founded by reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris
  • Strong appeal and success of FIA FREC has attracted entries from 12 squads each registering three cars for a 36-car line-up for its second season
  • Confirmation of the selected teams follows last week’s announcement of an expanded 10-event calendar for 2027

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, and FIA Member Club Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI), the organiser and promoter of the FIA Formula Regional European Championship (FIA FREC), are delighted to announce the teams that have been selected to contest the 2027 FIA FREC season.

Underlining the appeal of FIA FREC, the 10 teams that entered the inaugural season in 2026 reapplied to continue competing in the series. And to further highlight that popularity, two new teams have successfully applied to take part.

It means 12 teams, each entering three cars, will compete in FIA FREC season two for a total 36-car entry, an increase of six Gen2 Tatuus T 326 FIA Formula Regional cars compared to 2026. This rise of participant numbers underlines FIA FREC’s status as the step on the FIA Single-Seater Pyramid between Formula 4 Championships Certified by the FIA and FIA Formula 3.

The existing FIA FREC teams selected for the 2027 season are: ART Grand Prix, CL Motorsport, G4 Racing, MP Motorsport, Prema Racing, R-ace GP, Rodin Motorsport, RPM, Trident Motorsport and Van Amersfoort Racing.

Joining the existing FIA FREC teams for the championship’s second season are Invicta Racing and LN4 Fusion.

Invicta Racing already competes in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, clinching back-to-back Drivers’ titles with Gabriel Bortoleto (2024) and Leonardo Fornaroli (2025). The UK-based outfit currently leads the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Drivers’ Championship with Rafael Câmara ahead of the final two rounds of the season.

Recently established and co-founded by reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris, LN4 Fusion is based in the Veneto region of northern Italy as well as operating a base in the UK. With a strong personnel line-up it has plans to expand into other categories in 2027.

The 10-event 2027 FIA FREC season gets under way at Autodromo do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal, from 8-11 April. Subject to contract, the schedule will include a round in support of the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix. Click HERE to find out more.

FIA Single-Seater Commission President Emanuele Pirro said: “The fact all 10 teams from the inaugural FIA FREC season reapplied to take part in 2027 is a great endorsement of the championship’s importance as a key platform for drivers and teams to develop and showcase their skills and capabilities in a highly competitive environment. We are also very pleased that the appeal of FIA FREC has resulted in two new teams applying to take part for what will be a 36-car line-up, which will only serve to strengthen FIA FREC.”

What is FIA FREC?

Having taken over from the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) for the 2026 season, FIA FREC is the headlining Formula Regional Championship Certified by FIA and the step between Formula 4 Championships Certified by FIA and FIA Formula 3 on the FIA Single-Seater Pyramid.

All FIA FREC drivers compete in the second-generation Formula Regional Tatuus T 326 on Pirelli tyres. Not only does the level playing field ensure close competition, it also increases the rate that drivers develop.

Developed by Italian constructor Tatuus in partnership with the FIA, the Tatuus T 326  follows the aerodynamic philosophy deployed in Formula 1 to encourage closer racing, while representing another step in terms of performance and safety. The car features the Race Mode push to pass system, which allows drivers to trigger full engine performance when activated by a button pressed from inside the cockpit. Its introduction is the result of extensive research and development managed by the FIA.

Subject to final FIA confirmation, Emanuele Olivieri is the FIA FREC champion for 2026 after he beat Sebastian Wheldon, Kean Nakamura-Berta and Rashid Al Dhaheri during a four-way title showdown at Hockenheim in Germany last month. Italian Olivieri also won the FIA FREC Rookie title, while R-ace GP from France secured the FIA FREC Teams’ title during the Hockenheim weekend.

Formula 1 drivers Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto and Isack Hadjar are all graduates of Formula Regional while several drivers who raced in FIA FREC in 2026 did so with the support of Formula 1 team academies.
