MSA celebrates South Africa’s Women’s Day with All-Female Formula Monoposto Race at Zwartkops

Motorsport South Africa (MSA), in partnership with Formula Monoposto and Zwartkops Raceway, will host a landmark all-female race on Saturday, 9 August 2025, in celebration of South Africa’s Women’s Day — a national day commemorating the strength, leadership, and achievements of women in motorsport.

This special event at Zwartkops Raceway highlights the growing presence of women in the sport. An expected grid of 15 to 20 licensed women drivers will compete in vehicles meeting Formula Monoposto specifications and national safety standards. Among them will be regulars from the Formula Libre series, experienced racers from other categories, and enthusiastic newcomers.

The initiative supports MSA’s ongoing efforts to increase female participation across all areas of motorsport, reflecting broader commitments to diversity, inclusion, and community development.

The event also honours the women who paved the way: South African legends like Desiré Wilson, one of only five women to race in Formula One; Glenda Mann, Judy Witter, Clare Vale, and many more — including Jackie Parrot, Pat Sonnenschein, Paige Lindenberg, Fabienne Lanz, and the late Kim Cilliers, a transplant recipient who overcame enormous challenges to compete legally and proudly in national racing.

In 2025, Formula Libre Gauteng launched the country’s first MSA-recognised Club Championship dedicated to women drivers — a milestone initiative that has already sparked strong interest and plans for expansion in 2026. The 9 August event builds on that momentum and will be a call to further open doors for future generations.

MSA CEO Vic Maharaj said: “This event at Zwartkops is an important milestone — not only as a celebration of South Africa’s Women’s Day, but as a demonstration of the inclusive future we are working towards in motorsport. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that women are encouraged, supported, and represented in competition. Through initiatives like this, we aim to build a sport that is more accessible, diverse, and reflective of the society we serve.”
