Kristoffersson leads Bakkerud and Veiby after dramatic opening day in Latvia
Day one of the 2026 FIA European Rallycross Championship season opener in Riga delivered the drama rallycross fans had been waiting for, as the leading contenders traded blows across three fiercely competitive qualifying sessions at Biķernieki.

By Saturday evening, reigning champion Johan Kristoffersson held the overnight advantage on 134 points, narrowly ahead of Andreas Bakkerud on 126 and Ole Christian Veiby on 123.
Kristoffersson opened Saturday’s qualifying action by underlining why he remains the benchmark in rallycross. The KMS driver launched cleanly in Q1 and set a rapid 3:16.194, nearly two seconds quicker than KMS stablemate Ole Christian Veiby, to secure the maximum 50 qualifying points in the day’s opening session.
The remainder of the day proved more complicated for the reigning champion. In Q2, Finnish talent Joni Turpeinen made a superb start, perfectly positioning his Ford Fiesta into Turn 1 and squeezing both KMS drivers to take the lead. Andreas Bakkerud followed closely, while Kristoffersson dropped to fifth in the early stages.
The Swede responded quickly, making his way past traffic. From there, he began to close on the lead battle, piling pressure on Turpeinen and Bakkerud as the session built towards a dramatic finish. At the joker merge, it was a photo finish as Bakkerud, Turpeinen and Kristoffersson drifted through the final corner wheel-to-wheel. Having recovered from the back of the pack, Kristoffersson salvaged third in the session and 42 qualifying points.
Q3 brought another demanding race for the reigning champion, with Juha Rytkönen proving difficult to contain. The Finn made a strong start, muscling his way through the pack and making contact with Bakkerud before reaching Turn 1 in front. Kristoffersson was initially forced down to fourth, but quickly responded by taking the outside line into Turn 2 to move up to third behind the SET Promotion cars and team-mate Veiby.
Kristoffersson chose an early joker, moving into clean air and building pace as he closed back onto the leading group. The final lap produced another dramatic joker merge, with Bakkerud, Veiby, Rytkönen and Kristoffersson all converging in the closing moments. Rytkönen and Kristoffersson emerged ahead to finish first and second in the heat, with Kristoffersson ending the day at the top of the standings.
For Andreas Bakkerud, consistency was the defining feature of Saturday. Returning to European Rallycross competition after almost three years away, the Norwegian quickly showed he had lost none of his racecraft.
Bakkerud’s opening session produced an intense battle with Rokas Baciuška, with the Lithuanian pushing him hard as the pair traded tenths and paint. Despite the pressure, Bakkerud worked his way ahead to win the heat and finish third overall in Q1.
In Q2, Bakkerud came close to taking the overall qualifying win, narrowly missing out after another fierce fight at the front. He then completed Saturday’s final qualifying session fifth overall, ending the day second in the standings on 126 points.
Ole Christian Veiby completed the overnight top three after a solid and consistent Saturday for KMS. The Norwegian began the day strongly, taking second overall in Q1 and 45 points. He then became involved in a hard-fought battle with team-mate Kristoffersson in Q2, finishing fourth, before taking sixth in Q3. Despite the mixed session results, Veiby’s consistency leaves him third overall on 123 points.

Breathing down Veiby’s neck is Juha Rytkönen, who produced one of the standout performances of the opening day. The Finn got the better of the KMS drivers on the opening lap of Q3, beating Kristoffersson into Turn 1 and using strong defensive teamwork with SET Promotion team-mate Joni Turpeinen to keep the reigning champion under pressure.
Rytkönen’s starts were among the highlights of the day, as he muscled his way to the front and forced the leading contenders to work for every position. Although he was eventually reeled in during the longer runs, the Finn ended the day level with Veiby on 123 points, behind only on countback.
Rounding out the top five was Lithuanian driver and rally-raid star Rokas Baciuška. Backed by a vocal group of Lithuanian fans in the grandstands, Baciuška delivered an impressive opening day, including a strong battle with Bakkerud in Q1 and another sharp start in Q2. While he could not quite match the pace of the top three, he ended Saturday fifth overall on 119 points, an impressive result for the Dakar class winner.
After an action-packed opening day, Kristoffersson holds the advantage, but Bakkerud, Veiby and Rytkönen remain firmly within striking distance. With the top 24 drivers advancing to Sunday’s quarter-finals, the fight for victory in Latvia is only just beginning.
