08.10.26
  • The FIA World Rally Championship will return to the United States and United Kingdom in 2027, marking a major expansion of the calendar as the championship enters a new era.
  • Rally d'Italia will be held in Rome in 2027, bringing an exciting new tarmac round to the streets and roads around the Italian capital.
  • New calendar strengthens the championship in both new markets and traditional rallying heartlands.
  • Expansion comes as the WRC enters its new technical era, with new promoter leadership and growing manufacturer commitment.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, has today confirmed a landmark 15-round 2027 FIA World Rally Championship (FIA WRC) calendar, following its approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

The announcement follows last week’s confirmation that Ford will return to the FIA WRC, adding to the growing momentum behind the championship as it prepares to introduce new technical regulations from 2027 and enters a new phase of commercial development under new promoter leadership.

The return of the United States and United Kingdom, together with a move to Rome for Rally d'Italia, will strengthen the championship in both important new markets and its traditional rallying heartlands, creating new opportunities to connect with fans around the world.

Rally US, scheduled for 26-29 August, will bring the championship back to the United States for the first time since 1988. Its inclusion follows a successful WRC candidate event in June 2026 and builds on the continued development of rallying in the United States.

The United Kingdom will also return to the calendar for the first time since 2019, with Rally Scotland taking place from 30 September-3 October.

Based in Aberdeen and developed by FIA Member Club Motorsport UK, the event will reconnect the FIA WRC with one of rallying’s largest and most passionate fanbases.

Rally d'Italia will provide a third major addition to the 2027 calendar, stepping up from the FIA European Rally Championship (FIA ERC) to join the FIA WRC from 8-11 July. The tarmac event will combine stages across the Lazio region with a high-profile setting in Rome, demonstrating the pathway between the FIA’s regional and world championship events.

The 2027 season will begin with its traditional opener, Rallye Monte-Carlo, from 21-24 January, before moving to two of the championship’s classic events with Rally Sweden and Safari Rally Kenya.

Croatia, the Canary Islands and Japan will then form three consecutive tarmac rounds, before Acropolis Rally Greece opens the European summer gravel sequence.

Rally d'Italia will bring a return to the tarmac of Rome in July, before Estonia and Finland place two of the championship’s fastest gravel events back-to-back, in a region where rallying enjoys exceptional levels of participation and fan support.

Both events will continue to build on alternative approaches to rally format, following the successful introduction of Estonia’s condensed programme and Finland’s fan-focused Super Sunday concept.

Following Rally US, the championship will return to Europe for Rally Scotland, before travelling to South America for rounds in Paraguay and Chile.

Before the all-important final round of the season is contested on the desert dust of Rally Saudi Arabia from 25-28 November.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said: “The 2027 FIA World Rally Championship calendar reflects the strong momentum behind the WRC, with new events in the United Kingdom and Italy strengthening the Championship in countries with a proud rallying heritage, while the United States gives us an exciting opportunity to grow in a country where interest in rallying continues to rise.

“With the introduction of the WRC27 technical regulations, a new promoter thanks to the deal of the century that will bring long-term investment and ambition to the championship, and a strong global calendar, the future of rallying is extremely bright.”

Éric Boullier, CEO of WRC Promoter, said: “2027 represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the World Rally Championship, and this calendar reflects our ambition to build a stronger, more accessible and truly global championship.

“Returning to the United States and United Kingdom, alongside bringing the WRC to an iconic destination such as Rome, creates tremendous opportunities for our manufacturers, commercial partners and fans.

“Combined with the introduction of new technical regulations, we have a unique opportunity to shape the future of the WRC, attract new investment and bring the excitement of rallying to more people around the world.”

Julien Vial, COO of WRC Promoter, added: “Our vision is to build a championship that combines the unique sporting challenges of rallying with world-class events capable of engaging audiences around the globe.

“This calendar strikes that balance, bringing together some of the sport's most celebrated rallies with exciting new destinations. Working closely with our organisers and partners, we want to continue raising the standard of our events and delivering an exceptional experience for fans, competitors and stakeholders.”

WRC27 technical regulations

The WRC27 regulations will come into effect from 2027, allowing both OEMs (Manufacturers) and independent tuners to design, homologate and compete with cars at the highest level of the FIA World Rally Championship.

Developed to reduce costs, broaden participation and provide long-term stability, the regulations will cap the price of a ready-to-compete WRC27 car in tarmac specification at €345,000, significantly lowering the cost of competing at the highest level of world rallying.

Ford’s return to the WRC

Ford will return to the FIA WRC with a full factory programme from 2028 and develop an all-new Rally1 car under the FIA’s new technical regulations for 2029. It becomes the fourth Constructor to commit to developing a new specification Rally1 car, joining Toyota and independent projects Project Rally One and WRT Rally1 Spain.

Candidate events

Candidate events act as test events held ahead of an event’s potential inclusion in the FIA World Rally Championship. They allow the FIA to assess whether the proposed event can meet the championship’s sporting, safety and operational requirements. Candidate events were held in the United States, United Kingdom and Rome ahead of their inclusion in the 2027 calendar.

About the FIA World Rally Championship
The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is the ultimate test of driver skill, co-driver precision, and engineering endurance. Since its inception in 1973, WRC has pushed competitors and their cars to the limit across some of the most brutal and unforgiving terrains on the planet.

Spanning 15 rallies across five continents and 16 countries, the championship demands mastery of every surface imaginable - from snow-packed forests in sub-zero temperatures to rock-strewn mountain passes in blistering heat. Drivers and teams must adapt to ever-changing conditions as they battle against the elements and the clock.

The WRC is contested across three main titles: Drivers’ Championship, Co-Drivers’ Championship, and Manufacturers’ Championship - each requiring consistency, speed, and resilience to conquer rallying’s biggest prize.
