FIA awards ups top 3-star rating for road safety leadership
- UPS achieves the highest 3-star rating under the FIA Road Safety Index.
- The recognition highlights UPS’ leadership in road safety management across its global supply and value chains.
- The FIA Road Safety Index enables organisations to measure, manage and improve their road safety footprint.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, alongside Together for Safer Roads (TSR), today announced that UPS has achieved the maximum 3-Star rating under the FIA Road Safety Index.
Work-related crashes remain a major health and occupational challenge. With the FIA Road Safety Index, the FIA drives progress at scale to save lives, equipping organisations with a pioneering methodology to systematically assess and improve their road safety results. By measuring their road safety footprint – similar to a carbon footprint calculator – companies can identify risks, implement targeted improvements and track measurable progress across their operations and supply chains.
Achieving the 3-star rating signifies that UPS has implemented a comprehensive management system for its global road safety footprint that meets the highest standards for transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. UPS was particularly commended for:
- Its rigorous, data-driven safety governance;
- Its advanced information collection and analysis methods on both employee and third-party road incidents.
UPS manages an estimated 140,000 drivers and contractors with 3.4 billion miles driven annually. This achievement reflects its strong culture of safety and capacity to manage risks across a highly complex global network.
His Excellency, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA said, “I congratulate UPS on achieving the maximum 3-star rating under the FIA Road Safety Index. This demonstrates that leadership, when combined with strong governance and a commitment to data-driven improvement, delivers widespread meaningful results. UPS is showing how the private sector can play a decisive role in saving lives on the road.”
UPS President of Global Health and Safety Cormac Gilligan said, “Road safety is not just an operational requirement; it is a core value and a fundamental part of our culture at UPS. Earning the FIA Road Safety Index’s 3-star rating validates our strategy to manage road safety holistically – not only within our directly managed fleet but across our entire value chain. We have mapped, measured and mitigated road risk across all activities, ensuring that every trip meets the same stringent safety standards.”
FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism Willem Groenewald said, “UPS’s achievement proves that excellence in road safety is achievable even in the most complex networks. When global industry leaders like UPS set high standards, they help create safer roads not just for employees, but for everyone, everywhere.”
Executive Director of Together for Safer Roads Peter Goldwasser said, “Achieving the highest rating reflects UPS’s dedication to treating road safety as a system-wide responsibility. When companies apply the same rigor to safety that they do to efficiency or sustainability, they help make measurable, lasting improvements for people on and off the road. We congratulate UPS on this achievement and are proud of their longstanding partnership with Together for Safer Roads.”
The FIA Road Safety Index, developed by the FIA with funding support from its charitable organisation, the FIA Foundation, helps organisations worldwide turn road safety commitment into measurable action and accountability.
