The Fédération Internationale de  l’Automobile  (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, announced the launch of the FIA Road Safety Index (RSI) in Brazil, with ArcelorMittal, global leader and largest steel producer in Brazil, receiving the maximum three-star rating for its facility in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, during the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of São Paulo.

The FIA Road Safety Index is designed to provide organisations with a data-driven methodology to assess, manage, report and improve their road safety footprint and embed a culture of safety throughout their operations.

The FIA RSI is based on a star-based rating system, with three-stars currently representing the current maximum rating for road safety, certifying that an organisation understands and manages risk effectively.

The launch event at WEC 6 Hours of São Paulo leveraged the platform and profile of elite motor sport to promote a common commitment to road safety on the track and the road.

The event also emphasised the critical role the private sector plays in protecting lives on Brazilian roads, with ArcelorMittal’s achievement demonstrating how rigorous safety cultures can be effectively implemented within complex logistical and industrial operations, and establishing a new benchmark for corporate road safety within the country.

Luca Pascotto, FIA Head of Road Safety said: “The momentum we have witnessed this weekend at the WEC 6 Hours of São Paulo is exactly why the FIA Road Safety Index was created. We are utilising the platform of global motor sport to drive tangible, real-world improvements.

“By recognising ArcelorMittal's exceptional safety standards in Santa Catarina, we have established a strong foundation in Brazil. The immediate commitment from other leading Brazilian companies, like Ecovias and Célere Intralogística, shows that the private sector is ready to take responsibility and actively contribute to saving lives on the road.”

João Bosco Reis da Silva, Head of Sustainability at ArcelorMittal Flat Latam said: “Achieving the maximum three-star rating from the FIA is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the safety of our employees, our contractors, and the communities in which we operate.

“Our Santa Catarina facility has embraced our value of safety from production to logistics, and this recognition from the FIA validates the rigorous safety management systems we have put in place. We hope this milestone encourages other industries in Brazil to prioritise road safety across their value chains.”

The momentum from ArcelorMittal's recognition has already driven significant interest across the Brazilian corporate landscape. During the weekend's meetings, several major national companies, including Célere Intralogística, CEVA Logistics, Ecovias, Grupo Pereira, and Via Appia, expressed strong interest in joining the programme, with several already committing to formally enter the FIA Road Safety Index assessment process.

Working closely with organisations across the country, FIA Member Club, the Brazilian Automobile Association (AAB), is playing a pivotal role in driving this initiative forward locally.

Luanda Dantes Guerra, President of the AAB said: “The official launch of the FIA Road Safety Index in Brazil marks a critical turning point for our country's road safety strategy. By building on the outstanding example set by ArcelorMittal this weekend, the AAB is fully committed to leveraging this momentum.

“Improving road safety in Brazil cannot be achieved by government entities alone; it requires the active, measurable involvement of the private sector. We are thrilled to see companies like The Célere and Ecovias stepping up to this challenge.”
