Honda Becomes First to Achieve FIA’s New Five-Star Road Safety Index Rating
- The FIA has expanded the FIA Road Safety Index from three to five stars, raising the benchmark for road safety performance worldwide.
- The enhanced methodology recognises organisations that integrate road safety across their operations and demonstrate clear, measurable results.
- Honda is the first organisation to achieve the new five-star rating in the products/services rating.

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, has expanded the FIA Road Safety Index from three to five stars, strengthening its methodology to drive higher standards of road safety management and performance across organisations worldwide.
The FIA Road Safety Index provides organisations with a data-driven methodology to assess, manage, report and improve their road safety footprint, while embedding a culture of safety throughout their operations. Like a carbon footprint, an organisation's road safety footprint provides a measurable way to understand its performance and identify where action can deliver meaningful improvements.
Building on the existing three-star framework, which covers ‘Commitment’ and ‘Footprint’, the new four- and five-star levels add a higher level of assessment, with three additional modules:
- Planning: Involves setting a clear and transparent action plan using safety performance factors to deliver road safety commitments.
- Monitoring of Safety Performance: Tracks performance and outcomes across the organisation’s value chain and makes results accessible
- Safety Culture Management & Supply Chain or Products/Services Coverage: Embeds road safety across the organisation and its wider sphere of influence to address risks and continuously improve results.
This results in a more comprehensive framework that demands deeper, continuous integration of safety management across the entire value chain.
Japanese automaker Honda has become the first organisation to achieve the new maximum five-star rating, securing this top-score in the products/services rating*1. This milestone moment was recognised at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy during the FIA Formula One Italian Grand Prix in September.
Honda's achievement demonstrates how the expanded FIA Road Safety Index can be used by a global organisation to understand its road safety footprint, establish ambitious targets and translate those ambitions into measurable actionand tangible results.
H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said: “Road safety remains one of the world’s most urgent challenges, and no single organisation or sector can address it alone. Progress depends on action at scale across the public and private sectors, uniting all stakeholders around our shared goal of saving lives on the road.
“The FIA has an important role to play in accelerating that change for road users worldwide. Alongside our work with companies, we encourage governments to consider how the FIA Road Safety Index methodology can support regulatory compliance frameworks and strengthen road safety standards globally.
“We aim to build a shared culture in which road safety is recognised as a fundamental responsibility. I congratulate Honda on leading the way and becoming the first organisation to receive five stars.”
Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism, said: “The expansion of the FIA Road Safety Index to five stars marks an important step in our ambition to make road safety a measurable and accountable part of corporate decision-making. Organisations worldwide have a significant influence on road safety through their operations, employees, products, services and supply chains. With this expanded methodology, they can not only understand their road safety footprint more broadly, but set targets, measure progress, showcase in-depth commitment and continuously improve their performance.
“Honda becoming the first organisation to achieve the new five-star rating demonstrates the level of ambition we want the Index to inspire. We hope this milestone will encourage many more organisations to measure their road safety footprint and take concrete action to save lives.”
Honda's five-star rating recognises its comprehensive approach to road safety across its global product portfolio. The assessment for the rating recognised Honda’s ambitious targets, strong governance and advanced approach to measuring its global road safety footprint, alongside clear plans to deliver and monitor continued progress.
Mikihito Kojima, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Assistant Vice President and General Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion Operations, said: “We are deeply honoured that Honda safety initiatives have received the 5-Star rating, the highest recognition in the FIA Road Safety Index.
At Honda, our goal goes beyond delivering safer products. We look to the safety of each and every customer who uses our products, and everyone sharing the road around them. Through the advancement of our safety technologies, activities to promote safe driving and riding practices, and a clearer understanding of how traffic collisions occur so that we can keep improving, we work to reduce the number of traffic collisions themselves.
“The FIA Road Safety Index brings visibility to corporate road safety efforts and has given us a clearer view of where we stand today and of what we need to address next. We see this recognition as an important milestone on the way to our challenging goal of achieving zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050, and we will continue to take on that challenge. We also hope that the FIA Road Safety Index will encourage broader commitment to road safety among companies and organisations worldwide beyond individual companies and industries, helping to drive road safety forward across society.”
Through the FIA Road Safety Index, the FIA continues to mobilise public and private sector organisations worldwide to measure and improve their road safety performance across their operations and help make roads safer for everyone, everywhere.
*1 The FIA Road Safety Index system contains two ratings: 1) the “supply chain rating,” which covers a broad range of corporate activities from procurement of raw materials, to development and production of products, and customer delivery of the products; 2) the “products/services rating,” which evaluates the safety aspects of products/services.
Honda received the highest 5-star rating in the products/services rating.
