Equans drives sustainability and road safety through AI-powered FIA initiatives

  • Equans employees in Belux, Czech Republic, and certain regions in both France and the United Kingdom will be participating in a dedicated three-month FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC) to improve their safety and sustainability behind the wheel.
  • Equans Belux will also launch a pilot of the FIA Driver Safety Index (FIA DSI) using AI insights to benchmark, measure and reduce driver risk.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, today announced that, Equans employees across Belux, Czech Republic, and certain regions in both France and the United Kingdom will be participating in a dedicated edition of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC). Equans will also launch a pilot of the FIA Driver Safety Index (FIA DSI) using AI insights to measure and benchmark driver risk and improve road safety.

Now in its eighth year, the FIA Smart Driving Challenge is the world’s first challenge that rewards smart, safe and eco-friendly driving. As part of the global challenge open to all drivers worldwide, the FIA also organises dedicated challenges for companies such as Equans, which want to promote smart driving among their workforce.

Led by the FIA and powered by Greater Than’s AI technology, the challenge is easy to access, with drivers simply downloading the FIA Smart Driving Challenge app and connecting it to their car via Bluetooth to measure and improve their safety and sustainability performance.

Launching on 1 June 2026, Equans’ FIA Smart Driving Challenge will take place over a three-month period and encourage employees to drive safer and reduce their CO2 emissions or battery usage.

Equans Belux has also taken steps to strengthen driver safety by launching a pilot of the FIA Driver Safety Index.

Until now, driver risk measurement has often been fragmented and inconsistent. The FIA Driver Safety Index creates a common languagemaking driver risk understandable, comparable and actionable across multiple operations, geographies and vehicle types.

Built on Greater Than’s AI model, trained on over 20 years of real-world driving records across 106 countries, the FIA Driver Safety Index converts GPS data, including data collected as part of the dedicated FIA Smart Driving Challenge, into predictive insights, supporting Equans Belux in benchmarking their progress in driver safety risk and assessing  the likelihood of its employees being involved in road crashes.

Together, the FIA Smart Driving Challenge and the FIA Driver Safety Index create an end-to-end system for measuring and managing driver risk, helping organisations identify and mitigate those risks before crashes occur. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge helps individual drivers improve their behaviour while generating valuable driving data, and the FIA Driver Safety Index transforms that data into driver risk metrics that organisations can benchmark and act upon proactively.

By bringing together behaviour change, AI-powered insights and a common measure of driver risk across fleets and mobile workforces, these tools enable organisations like Equans to track progress over time, support data-driven strategies and accelerate safer and more sustainable mobility at scale.

Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism said: Every drive generates insights that can help save lives. As mobility systems become increasingly connected and data-driven, organisations have an opportunity and a responsibility to place safety and sustainability at the centre of every work-related journey.

By adopting the FIA Smart Driving Challenge and piloting the FIA Driver Safety Index, Equans is demonstrating how AI, data and small changes behind the wheel can come together to build a safer and more sustainable future for everyone on our roads.

Thibault d’Ursel, Head of Sustainability, Equans BeLux said: “Sustainability, safety and innovation are at the heart of our approach. Through our Equans’ FIA Smart Driving Challenge and the launch of the FIA Driver Safety Index pilot, together with our colleagues from the Czech Republic, certain regions in France as well as certain regions in the United Kingdom, we are creating synergies and accelerating the transition towards safer, more sustainable mobility. In a context of rising energy prices, every litre saved truly counts, and every safer journey has the potential to save lives.”

These initiatives complement Equans Belux’s roadmap to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, aligned with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The CO₂ Performance Ladder certification obtained in 2025 reflects the company’s strong commitment to sustainability.
