F1 – Antonelli takes controlled COTA win ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen to close in on F1 Driver’s title

Kimi Antonelli claimed his ninth victory of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship with a commanding performance at the United States Grand Prix, leading home Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen at the Circuit of The Americas. The Mercedes driver controlled the 56-lap race to win by 13.078 seconds, executing a successful one-stop strategy while his rivals battled for the remaining podium positions.
Antonelli made a clean start from pole position to retain the lead into Turn 1, while Leclerc moved ahead of Verstappen in the opening exchanges. The Red Bull driver quickly reclaimed second place before the end of the first lap, but a brief Virtual Safety Car to recover debris did little to disrupt Antonelli's progress. By Lap 10, the Italian held an advantage of almost three seconds.
There was plenty of action further down the field. Isack Hadjar dropped to fifth, while Oliver Bearman, Esteban Ocon and Alexander Albon each gained three positions. Contact between Albon and Fernando Alonso disrupted both drivers' races, while Carlos Sainz was squeezed towards the pit wall. Bearman also made contact with Pierre Gasly.
George Russell came under investigation following contact with Oscar Piastri while disputing position. The Mercedes driver was handed a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. McLaren also instructed Norris and Piastri to swap positions, allowing Norris to pursue Russell.
Haas made a similar call, asking Bearman to let Ocon through after the Briton reported unusual handling. The team prioritised Ocon's undamaged car in its bid for points at its home event, but Bearman's afternoon deteriorated further when he received a 10-second penalty before retiring with damage.
Verstappen triggered the first round of pit stops on Lap 14, switching to soft tyres and rejoining in eighth. He quickly worked his way back through the field, while Hamilton, Leclerc and Piastri also pitted. Norris followed a lap later.
Mercedes opted to extend its drivers' first stint on the medium compound. Antonelli continued to build his advantage, while Verstappen passed Russell to move into the top three behind Hadjar. Russell eventually pitted to serve his penalty and switch to hard tyres, dropping down the order.
Red Bull then instructed Hadjar to let Verstappen through, freeing the Dutchman to chase the leader. Antonelli made his sole stop at the end of Lap 24, switching to hard tyres and rejoining in fourth. His extended first stint had given Mercedes the strategic advantage it needed.
Problems complicated Red Bull's race. Hadjar reported difficulties with the throttle response, while Verstappen described his car as undriveable and expressed uncertainty over his front wing. Verstappen subsequently made a second stop, while Antonelli worked his way back to the front, passing Leclerc to reclaim the lead.
With 20 laps remaining, Antonelli led Leclerc and Hamilton. A lock-up at Turn 12 followed a tense encounter with backmarker Sainz, but the Mercedes driver quickly resumed his rhythm and continued to build his advantage.
Further stops for Ferrari promoted Lando Norris and Verstappen into the podium positions. McLaren kept Norris out on hard tyres in the hope of defending his position, but Verstappen rapidly closed the gap and passed him at the start of Lap 47.
Leclerc then joined the battle, overtaking Norris before moving ahead of Verstappen to take second. Hamilton also passed Norris to claim fourth, leaving the McLaren driver fifth as his tyres faded in the closing stages.
A second Virtual Safety Car was deployed when Valtteri Bottas stopped his Cadillac, allowing marshals to recover the car. Antonelli's substantial lead meant the interruption posed little threat, and he maintained control when racing resumed.
The Italian crossed the finish line in 1:35:16.650 to secure his ninth win of the season, with Leclerc 13.078 seconds behind and Verstappen a further 4.407 seconds back in third. Hamilton finished fourth ahead of Norris, while Hadjar secured sixth for Red Bull.
Piastri finished seventh, ahead of Russell, who recovered to eighth despite his penalty. Liam Lawson took ninth for Racing Bulls, with Gasly completing the top 10 for Alpine.
Nico Hülkenberg narrowly missed out on points in 11th, followed by Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto and Ocon. Lance Stroll, Alonso, Albon, Sainz and Sergio Pérez completed the classified finishers. Bottas, Franco Colapinto and Bearman were the three retirements.
