Excitement builds as FIA World Cups head to Macau

  • FIA FR World Cup racers in contention to win the 72nd Macau Grand Prix
  • New qualifying format to spice up the FIA GT World Cup action
  • Young stars from across the globe bid for glory in inaugural FIA F4 World Cup

Four FIA-sanctioned competitions will help to provide the on-track excitement over four action-packed days when the 72nd Macau Grand Prix takes place from 13-16 November.

As well as the second running of the headlining FIA Formula Regional World Cup, Macau Grand Prix week includes the eighth FIA GT World Cup, the deciding round of the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour, plus the inaugural FIA Formula 4 World Cup.

The Macau Grand Prix is a celebration of motor sport passion – a spectacular season finale for single-seater, GT and touring car drivers, who come together from different championships around the world to test their skills on the most demanding of circuits. At the same time, it has long been a proving ground for the rising stars of the sport and a hugely important event in the Asia-Pacific region, inspiring the future generations of drivers and fans.

This year marks a decade since the Macau Grand Prix has featured designated FIA World Cup races across different disciplines, and the three FIA World Cup events will be streamed and free live on the FIA’s official YouTube channel.

F4 World Cup adds new dimension to the global development pathway
This exciting addition to the Macau Grand Prix schedule provides a gilt-edged opportunity for the next generation of drivers to gain knowledge of the iconic yet demanding 6.120-kilometre Guia Circuit early in their single-seater careers. It’s also a chance for them to experience Macau’s street track ahead of stepping up to the FIA FR World Cup in future seasons.

A capacity 20-car entry is made up of drivers competing in national Formula 4 (F4) championships across the globe following a selection process carried out by the FIA, the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide. This process took into account individual performances in rounds of national F4 championships during 2025 or submissions sent to the FIA.

With technical and operational support provided by Mintimes, the organiser of the Chinese F4 Championship, in association the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile (FFSA) and Ligier, the ultimate level playing field has been created. This will allow these young prospects to be fully focused on demonstrating their potential with many contesting an international event for the first time.

Revised FIA GT World Cup qualifying format to spice up the show
A revised qualifying format is being trialled during this year’s FIA GT World Cup. In addition to the usual 30-minute qualifying session (Q1), there will be a second qualifying segment (Q2) for the fastest 10 drivers from Q1. Drivers will go out on track individually and get two qualifying laps during the new Q2 ‘Super Pole’ session, with each competitor permitted to use a new set of tyres from official supplier Pirelli. The remainder of the FIA GT World Cup programme – which is being contested by Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and Porsche – remains unchanged from 2024, with a 12-lap Qualification Race followed by the 16-lap Main Race to decide the winner of the eighth FIA GT World Cup.

Rising stars to follow in the wheel tracks of motor sport greats
The 27 drivers contesting the second running of headlining FIA FR World Cup will be in contention to claim the coveted Macau Grand Prix title, which was first run in 1954 and lists a host of illustrious former winners.

Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard all previously claimed victory in the single-seater showpiece, while 12 of the drivers who lined up on the grid for the Mexico City Formula One Grand Prix last month competed in Macau earlier in their careers. They included Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell and Max Verstappen.

Reza Seewooruthun previously competed in British F4 before stepping up to Formula Regional to highlight the opportunities provided by the FIA’s single-seater pyramid. The 19-year-old said: “Macau is the most prestigious standalone race that drivers of my age can participate in for formula cars with a unique opportunity to race on a circuit with such rich history and alumni of participants. I believe that the grid is one of the most competitive and experienced that you will come up against, giving you a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate your abilities.”

Macau Grand Prix highlights global motor sport participation
No fewer than 28 flags of countries or special administrative regions will be flown by the FIA World Cup competitors during Macau Grand Prix week, such is the event’s global appeal. The FIA FR World Cup has 15 countries or special administrative regions represented. The FIA Formula 4 World Cup lists 13 on the entry list, while the FIA GT World Cup is being contested by drivers from 10 countries or special administrative regions.

Pirelli to equip FIA World Cup contenders
Pirelli continues as the exclusive tyre supplier to the FIA FR World Cup and FIA GT World Cup as well as becoming the exclusive tyre supplier to the new FIA F4 World Cup. FIA FR World Cup competitors will count on the P Zero DMC tyre for dry weather and the Cinturato WSC in case it rains. FIA F4 World Cup will have the P Zero DMA tyre at their disposal for dry conditions and the Cinturato WSA for wet-weather use. For the FIA GT World Cup Pirelli will provide the P Zero DHG for dry conditions and the Cinturato WHB in case of wet weather.

Two for the title in Kumho FIA TCR World Tour season showdown
The eighth and final stop of the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour will be the culmination of a season-long title battle. With two races in Macau remaining, Lynk & Co Cyan Racing team-mates Thed Björk and Yann Ehrlacher are the two drivers in contention. Frenchman Ehrlacher is 34 points ahead of Swede Björk.
