ROWLAND TARGETING TITLE AT TEMPELHOF AS OLD AIRPORT AWAITS CONTENDERS FOR SEASON 11 CROWN
ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s most familiar circuit to stage penultimate instalment in battle for inaugural GEN3 Evo title.

For the first time this season, Oliver Rowland can put the destiny of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship crown beyond the reach of any of his adversaries in Berlin this weekend (12-13 July) – at the scene of his maiden success in the all-electric single-seater series.
Just under five years ago, during his initial stint competing for Nissan Formula E Team, Rowland converted pole position into a breakthrough triumph on the highly abrasive concrete apron of Tempelhof Airport circuit – a track that has hosted more E-Prixs than any other, with Saturday due to mark the championship’s 20th race at the historic venue across several different layouts.
Indeed, Berlin is the only city to have welcomed Formula E every season since its inception back in 2014 – including six contests run in swift succession in the summer of 2020. This year, Tempelhof will stage the first of two European double-headers to bring down the curtain on Season 11 – and there is plenty at stake...
NISSAN STAR AIMING TO CROWN COMMANDING CAMPAIGN
Rowland will arrive holding a 69-point advantage over his closest pursuer in the overall classification, and the maths is simple – if he is still ahead by 59 points or more when Sunday’s chequered flag falls, the title will be his.
While his form has dipped somewhat in the most recent three races, the Briton has unquestionably been the class of the field over the balance of the campaign, more than doubling his career victory count with wins in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Monaco and Japan.
Having reached the rostrum in both of last year’s contests in Germany, Rowland boasts a strong record at Tempelhof, and he will be bidding to sew up the spoils with a similarly strong performance – but in Formula E, rarely can anything ever be taken for granted...
PORSCHE PAIR KEEN TO PLAY HOME ADVANTAGE
Second in the standings entering the event, reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein will surely be spurred on by the home crowd’s support – and will likely need to improve upon his previous best finish of fourth in Berlin if he is to halt Rowland’s seemingly inexorable march to glory.
The German must outscore his Nissan rival by at least 11 points to keep his title defence alive, while TAG Heuer Porsche team-mate and fellow former champion António Félix da Costa needs three points further still.
Nobody has triumphed at Tempelhof more often than Formula E’s Season 6 king, however. Twice, the Portuguese ace prevailed there in 2020 – both times from pole position – en route to clinching the coveted crown, and he is also the race’s most recent winner, scything through the order from tenth on the grid to take the chequered flag first 14 months ago.
SPOILERS IN THE PACK
Beyond the three chief title protagonists, the 22-strong grid is ripe with potential spoilers in the pack. Indeed, almost half of the drivers in the field have won at Tempelhof before – and all-bar nine have reached the rostrum at the track in seasons past.
NEOM McLaren Formula E Team rookie Taylor Barnard might not be one of them – having only debuted in the championship two weeks prior to Berlin last year – but the talented young Brit has since tallied five podium finishes to sit just six points behind da Costa in the overall classification in fourth. Season 1 aside, no driver has ever been crowned in their maiden campaign; while that may be a long shot for Barnard, he can certainly not be counted out.
Round 13 of the 2024/25 Formula E campaign will begin at 16:05 CET on Saturday, 12 July, with round 14 getting underway at the same time the following day. As at other double-headers this season, Saturday’s Berlin E-Prix will include the championship’s innovative Pit Boost feature, requiring all participants to make a mandatory 30-second pit-stop for a 10% rapid recharge (3.85kWh) via a 600kW booster.
ROOKIES READY TO PROVE THEIR PROWESS
The annual Formula E Rookie Test will take place in Berlin immediately after the race weekend (Monday, 14 July), affording 22 hopefuls the opportunity to showcase their skills around the 2.345km, 15-turn circuit in the pioneering GEN3 single-seater.
Amongst the notable names will be 2023 FIA Formula 2 champion Théo Pourchaire and Ferrari F1 development driver Arthur Leclerc at Maserati, with Mercedes F1 reserve Frederik Vesti appearing for Andretti Formula E and multiple grand prix podium-finisher Daniil Kvyat taking to the track for DS Penske.
Triple W Series title-holder Jamie Chadwick will participate in the test for Jaguar, alongside 2024 F1 Academy champion Abbi Pulling (Nissan) and fellow F1 Academy race-winners Bianca Bustamente (CUPRA Kiro) and Ella Lloyd (McLaren). German teenager Elia Weiss, meanwhile, will make history as the youngest driver ever to pilot a Formula E car when he tries out for Porsche.
“The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Rookie Test has become an important date on the calendar,” commented FIA Head of Championship for Formula E, Pablo Martino. “It offers a rare chance for the stars of tomorrow to demonstrate their mettle on a high-profile stage and gain experience behind the wheel of a ground-breaking single-seater race car, while enabling teams to assess future talent. It’s a win-win all-round.”
