F1 – Norris beats Piastri to win thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris held off McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to convert a one-stop strategy into a superb Hungarian Grand Prix win and hand McLaren its 200th race victory at the end of a thrilling race at the Hungaroring. George Russell took third place for Mercedes after polesitter Charles Leclerc’s bid for victory faded in the second half of the race.
When the lights went out at the start, Leclerc got away quickest and the Ferrari driver stormed into the lead ahead of Piastri who was battling Norris. The Briton driver dived to the inside and that allowed Mercedes’ George Russell and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to sweep past Norris, dropping the Briton to fifth.
Behind Norris, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen made a poor start from P8 and the Dutchman was passed by Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson. The Red Bull driver soon recovered and after powering past Lawson on lap 2, he eased past Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll to take seventh place behind Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto. With the Brazilian driver racing smartly in DRS behind Alonso, the defending champion’s race stalled there.
Red Bull tried to work a change and brought Verstappen in on lap 18 to undercut the Sauber driver. Bortoleto resisted the provocation, however, and when Verstappen rejoined in 16th place the Brazilian stuck to a one-stop race and stayed ahead.
At the front, Piastri pitted on lap 19 to try to undercut Leclerc, but the gambit didn’t work. Ferrari reacted swiftly and after Leclerc pitted at the end of the following lap, he was able to get out comfortably ahead of Piastri as Norris took the lead.
With a one-stop race now representing Norris’ only chance of success, the Briton opted for the alternate strategy and stayed on track until lap 32. He then pitted for a set of Hard tyres and emerged in fourth place, behind Russell as Leclerc reclaimed the lead.
Further back, Verstappen was still fighting to make his way forward. On lap 30, the Dutchman attacked Lewis Hamilton into Turn 5. The Ferrari driver went off track and the Stewards indicated that the incident would be investigated after the race. Verstappen eventually finished the race in a disappointing P9.
Ferrari brought Leclerc in for his final stop on lap 41. Piastri stayed out, however, and the Australian moved into the lead ahead of Russell, Norris and Leclerc. Russell then made his final stop and Piastri at last pitted on lap 46. He bolted on Hard tyres and emerged 12 seconds behind race leader Norris and 4.8 behind Leclerc.
On lap 52, Piastri closed up to Leclerc on the pit straight and the Australian powered past the Ferrari to take P2, 8.2s behind Norris who was on far older Hard tyres.
With 10 laps remaining, Norris sat just 2.8s clear of Piastri who was lapping half a second quicker than his team-mate. Behind the top two, Leclerc was struggling and in the closing stages he was passed by Russell who sealed P3 ahead of the Ferrari who was also penalised for moving under braking as Russell passed.
It was now all about whether Piastri could use his tyre advantage and greater pace to get past his team-mate. But though he lapped upwards of half a second quicker and got inside DRS range of the Briton in the final laps, Norris was able to use his battery to keep Piastri at bay in the DRS zones and hold on to take the win. Behind the top four, Alonso took fifth ahead of Bortoleto, the second Aston Martin of Lance Stroll, Lawson and Verstappen. The final point went to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
