F1 – Leclerc wins dramatic British Grand Prix as Antonelli hits trouble and Verstappen crashes

Charles Leclerc claimed his first victory of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship season with a controlled drive in a dramatic British Grand Prix, as Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli saw his hopes of victory undone by a late mechanical issue and Max Verstappen crashed out in the closing stages.
The Ferrari driver made the decisive move at the start, getting away well from the front row to pass pole-sitter Antonelli into Turn 1. Team-mate Lewis Hamilton also made a strong getaway, slotting into second and demoting the Mercedes driver to third as the field streamed through the opening sequence at Silverstone.
Behind the leaders, there was early trouble for Oscar Piastri, who was forced to pit at the end of the opening lap after sustaining damage. Further back, Alexander Albon’s afternoon was compromised following contact with Oliver Bearman, with the Williams driver eventually retiring after completing 43 laps.
Out front, Leclerc settled into a composed rhythm, keeping Hamilton at bay while Antonelli began to recover from his difficult launch. The Italian soon found his way past Hamilton and set about reducing Leclerc’s advantage, with Mercedes opting to extend Antonelli’s first stint in search of a tyre-life advantage.
Leclerc made his stop and temporarily ceded the lead, but once Antonelli eventually pitted on Lap 36, the Ferrari driver returned to the head of the race, albeit by just under eight seconds. Antonelli emerged with fresher tyres and looked set to mount a late challenge, but his pursuit ended abruptly on Lap 41 when he reported a problem with his car.
Mercedes identified an issue relating to the left front wheel shield, and Antonelli was forced into two further pit stops as he struggled with the handling of the car. He rejoined down the order and, after a five-second penalty for track limits was applied, was classified 16th at the finish.
Antonelli’s setback left Leclerc in firm control, while Hamilton appeared on course to complete a Ferrari one-two. However, the podium fight changed again with six laps remaining when Verstappen spun off at Stowe and became beached in the gravel. The incident brought out the Safety Car and triggered a late round of stops across much of the field.
George Russell, who had earlier been forced into an additional stop because of a slow puncture, elected to stay out on Medium tyres. That decision promoted the Mercedes driver to second ahead of Hamilton, Lando Norris and the rest of the chasing pack. Although the Safety Car was initially expected to return to the pits before the final lap, the race ultimately finished under caution, preserving the order.
Leclerc crossed the line after 52 laps to take the ninth victory of his Formula 1 career, finishing 0.427s ahead of Russell, with Hamilton third, a further 0.345s back. The seven-time World Champion, however, remained subject to a post-race investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement.
Norris finished fourth for McLaren, ahead of Isack Hadjar, who delivered a strong drive to fifth for Red Bull. Racing Bulls enjoyed an excellent result, with Liam Lawson sixth and Arvid Lindblad seventh, while Gabriel Bortoleto secured valuable points for Audi in eighth.
Alpine completed the points finishers, Franco Colapinto taking ninth ahead of team-mate Pierre Gasly. Piastri recovered to 11th but missed out on points, ahead of Carlos Sainz in 12th for Williams, Bearman in 13th and Haas team-mate Esteban Ocon in 14th.
Sergio Pérez finished 15th for Cadillac, while Antonelli ended a frustrating afternoon in 16th. Valtteri Bottas was 17th in the second Cadillac, with Aston Martin pair Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll completing the classified finishers, both one lap down.
Verstappen was classified 20th after his late crash, while Albon and Nico Hülkenberg were the other retirements, the Audi driver stopping with a technical issue after 36 laps.
